The famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge are just some of the city’s iconic landmarks. But a lesser-known fact is that it also has more ocean pools than any other city in the world, explains Marie-Louise McDermott, an expert who has written extensively about these swimming spots. “The city of Sydney is unique because it was built on a surf coast and people formed organisations to build ocean pools to swim in,” she says.
The sdy pools have had their share of drama, including council infighting, pork-barrelling claims and heritage concerns. The project was supposed to open in March 2021, but was delayed by the Covid pandemic and La Nina, while design and structural issues emerged. As a result, the budget has blown out to more than $100m and the opening date is now not expected until 2025 at the earliest.
It’s not just North Sydney residents frustrated by the delay. Many others are appalled by the project’s spiralling costs and say it is not in keeping with the seaside community’s values, particularly because it will have an indoor pool.
Despite the delays, campaigner Kathryn Butler, who grew up swimming at the Maroubra pool, is still fighting for the new facility. She believes the new pool will be safer and more accessible for families, elderly people and those who feel uncomfortable in the surf. She hopes it will be made from modern, sea-sensitive materials and will include a boardwalk, deckchairs, lifeguards and shade.
Aside from being a convenient and affordable way to keep fit, swimming can also be beneficial for mental health. It is said to relieve stress, lower the heart rate, increase energy levels and boost metabolism. Plus, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people and make friends.
