The Sidney Prize is awarded each month for an outstanding piece of journalism published in the previous month. Submissions can be made for either an individual article or an entire magazine issue. The deadline for nominations is the last day of each month. The winner will receive a $500 honorarium and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel.
The prize is named after entrepreneur and community leader Sidney Black, who died in 1997. It is administered by the University of NSW Business School and is open to all students in Australia. The winning entry will be published in the autumn 2024 issue of Overland, and two runners-up will be published online.
In the past, the prize has been awarded for work highlighting issues of social injustice or environmental sustainability. In the future, it will be given for works that demonstrate how social justice is connected to the arts. In addition, the prize will support innovative work aimed at fostering dialogue and understanding between people with different cultural perspectives.
For more information about the Sidney Prize, please visit their website. To enter, submit a short story of no more than 1000 words to the competition. Entries are judged by a panel of judges, who will select the best story. The winner will be notified on or before December 31st.
